Moses Face, the Snow Queen, and the Evil Eye

The “evil eye,” ayin ha’ra in Hebrew, is the idea that a person or supernatural being can bewitch or injure an individual merely by looking at them. Have you ever looked at someone with a stink eye? Have you ever been bewitched by someone?

When I was around 16 years old, I went to the drive-in (showing my age) with my boyfriend. He had a mustang —1960’s, and as I went to hop up on the hood to watch the movie with him, I lost my balance, falling into a rusty car antenna that was pushed down and missing the top mount. Blood began to pour out of my eye, and I spent a few days in the hospital. With numbing medicine and tweezers, they began to pluck the metal out of my eyeball and rinse it in a solution.  Once released from the hospital, I wore a patch on one eye like a pirate. Arrr, Mate! I had some damage in the eye and, for many years, only needed one contact lens. But as a teenager, I didn’t worry much about my eye. I thought I was invincible. I’m thankful that I didn’t lose my sight, but spiritually we can be blind in our right eye and not know it.

Many people at the drive-in that night went to high school with me; they saw something different. By the time I returned to school, the gossip had gone full circle.

“I heard you got beat up at the drive-in and stabbed in the eye!” “Oh, Tekoa, I heard so and so cornered you in the bathroom and punched you in the eye, and her ring cut your eyeball.” The stories went on and on, each with different settings. I remembered when I went to the bathroom to see if my eye was only running with water. I was surprised to see all the blood. One girl was standing at the sink next to me. She looked at me and said, who did this to you?” Sadly, many times we get off balance and do things to ourselves, but my point in sharing this story is that we often judge with an evil eye. We don’t have all of the story or information.

Today, I think back to that night and pray for a good eye that has an antenna that reaches the heavens and sees like my Father and Yeshua, but even I know I fail at this time and again. I know that at times I hear things and see things that are not as I perceive them. It is only when I hear my Father’s Voice that I am certain. Yeshua tells us that His sheep know His Voice.

The word antenna comes

from 17th century Latin, alteration (of a ship), used in the plural to translate Greek keraioi’ horns (of insects).

Curiously, the Latin vulgate mistranslated Moses’ face shining as the word translated “shine” is closely connected with a word translated “horn.” Hence, the Latin version and others have rendered the verb “to be horned.” From this rendering of the word has arisen the popular representation of Moses with horns on his forehead; e. g. in Michelangelo’s statue at Rome.” (Barnes Notes). Even the meekest man to ever live is given horns due to misunderstandings. I think we all would prefer to have a shiny face versus horns any day. We all need our antennas tuned to His Channel, clear of any rust or eye damage, and washed in His Word and His blood. We need to be seeing with 2020 vision in this year 2020. What we’ve been seeing has been shocking to look at. Things can be hidden like Moses in a basket, or like the man Moses murdered and hid in the sand. There are always things hidden that He wants to reveal to us. All sorts of vial things hidden are surfacing in our media. It is as if the swamp is being drained. Everything in darkness must come forth to the light in order to be made whole. Even sex traffickers need the blood of Yeshua and freedom from bondage.

After Moses spent time with the Father in intimacy, he hid his face behind a veil. Later in the story, the Father will hide His face from Moses and only show him His Backside. There’s an old joke that goes like this: Does your face hurt? Because it’s killing me. This is a bad joke, but the Israelites did not want to look at Moses’ shining face. It made them afraid. Afraid of what? They were awestruck at the radiance that shined forth from Moses. They knew Moses had been in the presence of HaShem, and they had not. Adonai’s Voice had terrified them on the mount. There had been thunder and lightning, and smoke and the people trembled. Have you ever trembled in the presence of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Have you ever felt shiny after spending intimate time with Him?

Our faces, like Moses, are to be getting brighter and brighter. Moses was spending time with the Father, and afterward, his face shone with brilliant light. Our countenance is supposed to reflect His Son, Yeshua, and we are to be his image-bearers. Paul said, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (II Cor. 3:17-18, NASB).

“And indeed, if our Good News has been veiled, it has been veiled in those who are perishing, in whom the mighty one of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so that the enlightening of the Good News of the esteem of Messiah, who is the likeness of Elohim, does not shine on them. For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Messiah יהושע the Master, and ourselves your servants for the sake of יהושע. In whom the mighty one of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so that the enlightening of the Good News of the esteem of Messiah, who is the likeness of Elohim, does not shine on them.” (II Corinthians 4:3-5, ISR).

What kind of blindness is Paul speaking of? Who is the (mighty one of this age) god of this world? In the book of Deuteronomy, we read that The Lord Elohim is God in heaven and on the earth below, and there is no other. Could it be possible that the Pharisaical spirit has blinded their eyes? It was the god at that time. Perhaps, Moses saw the face of Yeshua?

This is the mirror we want to reflect.

Have you looked in a mirror lately? Have you looked at someone with a stink eye?  Most of the world is wearing a mask. It is hard to present His image with a mask on or even a homemade colorful one. Many states are trying to fine people and charge them if found not wearing a mask. The principalities and powers in high places (government leaders) are who we wrestle against, but wrestling requires action. (Ephesians 6:12) (Gen. 32:22)

Is this a time to be silent and put a veil on?

Paul said, “Therefore having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech, and are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel would not look intently at the end of what was fading away. But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ. But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” (II Cor. 3:13-15, NASB).

Sha’ul or Paul said that we are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face. He said that we were to speak with great boldness and shine.

I want to close by sharing a fairy tale that involves something I feel is extremely important during 2020, and it involves our eyesight, which also affects our ears/hearing.

Han’s Christian Andersen, an author, best remembered for his fairy tales, wrote The Snow Queen, which was published in December of 1844.

We will look at some of the principal characters, and I will ask you to look deeper with me into the mirror and inspect your right eye (spiritual sight). If we are His image-bearers, why do we have ogre eyes and a distorted vision of people in our families, ministries, and lives? Is there a shard of glass that needs to be removed or a tiny grain of sand? Suspicion the size of a grain of sand. . . Let us start out with Han’s voice as he tells a beloved tale of becoming unfrozen and bringing healing to our eye gate and our ear gate, for if we silence the outside noise, and cleanse our eyes, we can hear light. Have you ever heard light?

“One day, an evil trolling ogre made a mirror that had the property of diminishing everything wonderful, good, kind, and beautiful that was reflected in it into virtually nothing. Matter a fact, things that were bad only grew worse.

“The loveliest landscapes looked like boiled spinach in it, and the best of people turned ugly or stood on their heads with no stomach, their faces became so distorted that they were unrecognizable, and if someone had a freckle, you could be sure that it spread out over both nose and mouth. It was most amusing, ‘the ogre’ said. If a good pious thought, went through the mind of a person, a grin appeared in the mirror, so that the ogre devil had to laugh at his ingenious invention. Everyone who went to an ogre school – for he ran such a place – said far and wide that a miracle had taken place; now for the first time one could really see, they felt, what the world and people really looked like. They ran around with the mirror, and finally, there wasn’t a country or a single person that had not been distorted in it. Now they wanted to fly up to Heaven itself to make fun of the angels and the ‘Good Lord.’ The higher they flew with the mirror, the louder it laughed, they could hardly hold onto it; higher and higher they flew, closer to God and the angels; then the mirror shook so violently as it grinned that it shot out of their hands and crashed down onto the ground, where it shattered into hundreds of millions, billions and even more pieces, and that was precisely what caused even more misfortune than before, for some of the pieces were scarcely as big as a grain of sand, and these flew all over the world, and wherever they got into people’s eyes, they stayed put and then those people saw everything wrong, or only had eyes for what was bad about something, for every speck of the mirror had retained the same power as the whole mirror had possessed; some people even got a tiny mirror shard in their heart, and that was quite horrible – the heart became like a lump of ice.

Some pieces of the mirror were so large that they were used for window-panes, but it wasn’t worth looking at one’s friends through that pane; others were put in spectacles, and things went badly when people put on those glasses so as to see clearly and be just; the evil ogre laughed till his stomach burst.” Full story Here– Hans Christian Anderson.

Have you noticed the distorted views of many? Only seeing the worst in others. Judging by the outward appearance and not the hearts of individuals and lumping everyone under specific titles. Not all people are the same.

In the Snow Queen, from the tiniest grain of sand and the smallest shard of glass, the stink eye got into all the people in the fairy tale. If the stink gets in the eye, it distorts the ear. If one has a wrong thought about a person, soon when the person speaks or tries to explain something, it’s met with a different octave sound. The frequency is not tuned in and now comes through the airwaves like fingernails on a chalkboard. Because of the glass hidden in the heart and the shards that have entered the eye gate, the person now cannot hear anything lovely coming from the voice of the one they have looked at through the dark glass of the adversary. Grab some Visine and a Q-tip.

The second portion, The Little Boy and The Little Girl, occur years later. The boy, Kai, and the girl, Gerda, live next door to each other. Gerda means guardian. Peace. Fertility. Famous bearer. Like Eve (Chavah), we are to be guardians of His Torah, image-bearers and produce seeds, life in perfect shalom. Kai has multiple meanings, including “ocean” (海), “shell” (貝), “restoration,” and “recovery.” As a surname, it means “Worth.” One meaning stated it means Chief and King of Kings, and also a meal or a feast. Yeshua, the second Adam is worthy of all glory and holds the title of King of Kings, but in this fairy tale, it seems we are dealing with a little boy who has been cast under a spell of the evil eye and its hurt his heart.

The children, Kai and Gerda, lived in a large city and grow vegetables and roses in window boxes placed on gutters.

“Kai’s grandmother tells the children about the Snow Queen, who is ruler over the “snow bees” that produce snowflakes that look like bees. As bees have a queen, so do the snow bees, and she is seen where the snowflakes cluster the most. Looking out of his frosted window one winter, Kai sees the Snow Queen, who beckons him to come with her. Kai draws back in fear from the window.”

By the following spring, Gerda has learned a song that she sings to Kai: Roses flower in the vale; there we hear Child Jesus’ tale! Because roses adorn the window box garden, roses always remind Gerda of her love for Kai. On a pleasant summer day, fragments of the troll-mirror get into Kai’s heart and eyes. Kai becomes cruel and aggressive. He destroys their window-box garden, he makes fun of his grandmother, and he no longer cares about Gerda, since everyone now appears bad and ugly to him. The only beautiful and perfect things to him now are the tiny snowflakes that he sees through a magnifying glass.” The Snow Queen– Wikipedia.

Instead of a Queen Bee, we have a Snow Queen and snow bees. If a bee is frozen, how can it make sweet honey? The Torah is said to be sweeter than honey, and our words should be too. Have we become snowflakes?

“It is unlikely that any two snowflakes are alike due to the estimated 1019 (10 quintillion) water molecules which make up a typical snowflake…” Yeshua’s Body is made up of many people, and no two are alike, and all are gifted and anointed to do a job, but the Body needs to be thawed out, unified, and humble.

By the time we get to the 7th story, we learn that Kai has been staying with the snow queen, and he is blue, cold as ice, and utterly oblivious to his condition. The Snow Queen leaves to visit some Southern volcanoes. While she is gone, Kai works on puzzle pieces made of ice. Are we busy doing the same? Are we numb to the condition of our own spiritual house, His Body, what is going on outside our doors? Have we lost our identity by being swept up in puzzles and piecing together knowledge from His Word but without His Ruach Holy Spirit? Have we turned so blue following Judah that we have left the Messiah and veiled our faces?

The snow queen leaves Kai alone and travels to warmer lands,– the land of volcanos. It was the volcanoes Vesuvius and Etna that she visited. “There are three theories about the origin of the name Vesuvius:-Hercules was son of the god Zeus and Alcmene of Thebes. Zeus was also known as Ves (Ὓης) in his aspect as the god of rains and dews. Hercules was thus alternatively known as Vesouvios (Ὓσου υἱός), “Son of Ves.” This name was corrupted into “Vesuvius.” From the Oscan word fesf, which means “smoke.”

Etna means, “I burn.” This smoke and fire, and rain is a falseness. This is not the fire and smoke that will fall when Yeshua returns; this is fire and ice of the snow queen—Like Tammuz and Baal worship, this must be cleansed. We do need the spirit of Elijah to tear down the false altars. Isaiah reveals the true fire and ice.

“In that day, the Branch of the LORD (Yeshua Messiah) will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth will be the pride and the adornment of the survivors of Israel. It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem. When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and purged the bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning, then the LORD will create over the whole area of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, even smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy. There will be a shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and refuge and protection from the storm and the rain.” (Isaiah 4:1-6, NASB).

After the icy snow queen leaves, Gerda walks in to find Kai, but he cannot recognize her. She weeps over him, and her tears melt the shard of the mirror that had pierced his heart, and then he begins to weep and cleanses his eye from the evil eye. Can we weep over the Body of Messiah and pray that we unthaw from our icy blue condition? Can we cleanse our eyes of rust and the evil vision towards our brothers and sisters and take every shard of glass from among us—melting our icy cold condition and be filled with His wonderous Spirit? I pray so. May we become bold and unveiled, as lights that shine in the darkness.

Blessings and Shalom,

Tekoa Manning

You have some parables with punch in there!!!
I especially like the ‘blue following Judah…..left Yeshua behind (paraphrase here)! That’s some subtle stuff… we are indicted about leaving our first love.
Those mirror shards become logs when Yeshua speaks of our eyes….and eeeew your poor eye …pulling out metal,..blood…. anyway I love this blog!
The mocking of G-d in these days won’t do any more good than it did for the ogre!

    1. Oh, friend! I love the Jewish people. Our Yeshua from the tribe, but I see a blue smoke clouding eyes. Have we lost our “Jesus” even though we now know the correct pronunciation?
I’m grieved at my own condition. I’m reading the Brit for awhile. I’m not skipping Torah portions but I’m heavy leaning on what Messiah said.
Thank you for reading my chicken scratch. I’ve edited again. 😂

Love you always, always gets me.
